Monday Moment #86: a writing prompt for your work-in-progress

This post is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you. Trust me! (But be careful if you choose to read on because this Moment comes with a challenge.)

So, here's the thing. We're friends, right? If you come here to Cuppa, then we must be friends. If this is your first time visiting Cuppa, well...we must become friends veryvery quickly because I can ONLY share this with friends. Seriously!

Why?

I told you already.

It's painful.

*deep breath*

It's that time of year!

SCHOOL PHOTO TIME

Which is all fine and good until you find out how bad your school photo really is. So, with a little help from my chuckling hubby, we chose one of my photos. Oh yes. We did.

6th grade. 'Nuf said? Did anyone have a good photo from sixth grade?

Prepare yourselves...

Oh the volumes this photo speaks! The rolled-forward shoulders. The retainer. And yes...the MULLET!

So. Very. Bad.

But I see this photo and I think, "That's who Judy Blume wrote for." And that girl, and so many just like her, is why I write today.

And because my husband laughed so hysterically at my mullet, I present him in sixth grade...

What sucks is that he was totally cuter, not nearly as awkward and homely, with only a bitty mullet.

Don't say I didn't warn you. This is a special two part Moment, because before a I share the writing prompt, I throw down a challenge: I'LL SHOW YOU MINE IF YOU SHOW ME YOURS. If you are a blogger, I challenge you to share your awkward school photo in tribute to the kid/teen you write for then post your link in the comments so we can all share in your awkward joy. Come on. You know you want to.

And for the Moment:

What memorable school photo or school photo experience has your character gone through?

I've had so many...

- The year my dad trimmed my bangs. I raised my eyebrows and watched the scissors, which is why my bangs were cut so very, very short.

- The year I had braces and a stiff neck, and sat in the chair in the Most Awkward Fashion possible.

- The year I tried really hard to give a cute smile...and ended up with my eyes closed. I look a bit drunk.

Your mullet is totally awesome. And better than my boy haircut from around that age. Even when I wore earrings, people thought I was a boy (an old lady compliment my mom on her "three fine sons."

OH MY GOSH!! You will have to start calling daughter #1 "mini me". And hubby is one cute hunk!!

Martha - I am WAITING to see each and every one of those photos! And the lady got it part right, you are fine in so many ways.

Anonymous (who I'm sure is YOM), I think I see girlie #1 in that photo too, even though she is not at all awkward or homely. And hubby is pretty hunky.

Sixth grade, home perm. I had a moment of clarity midway through the process--balanced on the rim of the tub, sick on fumes--that I shouldn't have let my mom talk me into this. Bad, bad decision.

Great post! Photos of that age remind us all how painful it is to make the wrong choices on the way to learning how to think for ourselves.

I love the photos! I swear I've seen some girls sporting mullets here on Orcas. A fashion rewind . . .

Like Martha, I have so many special school pics. The adorable pixie (words from grownups, not me) also made me brother #3 and did nothing to hide my huge snowball cheeks. I'm sure this is why I wear my hair long now.

Thanks, Amy. So funny. I love that you had a your moment of clarity in the middle of the process.

Oh, Michele, thatfrightens me. Mullets should never come back. When my mom saw that picture of me she said, "Who let you do that to your hair?" HA!

This is a great prompt! Several months ago I wrote an akward school photo moment in to my story. It's hysterical, at least I hope, and so very relatable! How did we ever survive?!?!
