Some days I think I come up with the most random things. Especially for these Monday Moments. But hey, life's random, right?
Yesterday was my birthday. If you are a facebook friend (fb friends, thank you so much for all the overwhelming b-day lovin') then you know that my digits now equal 10. (If you're not a fb firend, you should be...twitter too).
My grandma called to wish me a Happy Birthday (Hi, Grandma! Love you. Give Grandpa my love too.) So, my grandma is new to the Internet, and now that she's online she can read my blog (yay, Grandma). Anyway, let me get on with this. She asked me what I was going to write about for my Monday Moment (she also wanting to know if I'd get it posted early) but I had to tell her I had no idea.
You know, some days I know exactly what I want to write about. Some days I think I do, but then it changes. And days like today, I don't. Not until the fingers begin to type. Then I think...random.
I can be so random.
And look! I'm not even on topic yet.
Question: What kind of cake do you think I requested (and typically request) for my birthday? Go on! Take a guess.
I bet you won't get it! (Grandma, you already know, so you can't guess.)

Think you've got it?
ANGEL FOOD! Yup. Angel Food cake with seven minute frosting. Imagine me singing out, "Heaven!" Love the stuff.
Here's the thing, I've always loved Angel Food cake. Typically as a kid, my mom made a birthday cake and an Angel Food with no frosting (I think because there was a lot of family...but maybe I should ask). BUT, my favorite thing was when she would later toast me a piece under the broiler. I thought that was most tasty morsel I could set on my tongue. That said, when I've tried it as an adult. Meh! It's just not the same. And that's so disappointing.
Does your character ever have high expectations for an experience, only to be disappointed by it?

My protagonist and her sister get to see their mother for the first time in four years (they were evacuated out of London during WWII). They find themselves walking very slowly to her as she gets off the train and they can't think of what to say to each other. It was a very surreal scene to write because she's in slow-motion and very aware of all her thoughts. She's not the sort to obsess, but here she does because she can't believe she's not running to her mother and giving her the biggest hug ever. But after that long, even with tons of letters, they're like strangers and don't know where to pick up.
A little more serious than your great Monday Moment, but it's the first thing that came to mind. Happy belated birthday!
Emilie - I LOVE that you had something so different and serious come up from my moment. It's exactly why I started sharing these Monday Moments: something from my life causes me to ask a question that could apply to a character's life somewhere, somehow.
That makes my day! Thank you. (and for the happy b-day)
Jolie, Jolie, Jolie,
When I get home from being in Little Rock and Billings, I am going to email you a copy of my mom's recipe for 7 minute frosting written in her beautiful Palmer Method penmanship. She always made it because it was my grandpa's (her dad) fav.
And I adore angel food cake though I've never had one made from scratch. What would you do with all those leftover yolks?!
Happy birthday! Ooh, angel food cake being toasted. Now I gotta wipe drool off my keyboard.
The random thing I thought of this morning? My re-discovered bright pink jacket. I feel a blog post coming on...
Happy late birthday!! I am far, far behind on my blog commenting, but I wanted to tell you that I've really been enjoying your posts. (And I LOVE your Wilbur pig.)
And hang in there with the revisions. You are SO CLOSE! I know you're kicking major story butt! :)
Kirby - I'm so looking forward to seeng that recipe! Thank you. First, to see if it's similar to my grandma's recipe, and second, I have to see this penmanship! I also have never had homemade angel food, but it has to come from a mix for me (I'm not a fan of the grocery store variety).
Yat-Yee - I will have to jump over to your blog and see this rediscovered bright pink jacket!
Stephanie - Thanks, Steph! You've got a lot on your plate. I'm surprised your even taking the time to peek at blogs right now, let alone comment. That little Wilbur pig is staring at me as I type, reminding me I should get back to outlining.
