Monday Moment #28

First...I've been dubbed! Thanks, Ben.

As I write this, I'm home alone. Well, the girlies are here with me, but I'm the only grown up. Okay, I'll admit it, I don't like to be home alone...especially when it gets dark. I just don't. I know it's no different than any other night, but when I'm alone, I can freak myself out.

IT'S ALL IN MY HEAD!

Maybe it's just something you never grow out of, the silly things were afraid of. I still remember a night when I was a kid (alone in my room) and I heard a noise coming from the ceiling. To me, that scratching sound was so loud and threatening, I was certain a bad guy was digging through my roof with a pick. You can probably guess what it was...an itty-bitty mouse.

What is a silly fear your character has? And, what crazy things do they make up in their head that make it worse?

Okay...now how about you. Do you want to share your own silly fear? (You know, just to make me feel better.)

Certainly heights! Hate em. But I'm home at night alone a lot, and that creepy night thing doesn't go away completely when you grow up. Especially when I take Linus out to go to the bathroom, I kinda check behind me now and again, in case that Canadian hatchet murderer is, you know, about to kill me.

Funny how having anybody there with you helps.

I actually think this is a great thing to know about my characters - what's their fear (silly or not!)
And, um, have to admit - as a kid, a real live wild mouse above my head would have been pretty terrifying (I stumbled into the middle of the movie Willard (rats rats rats) on TV when I was pretty young, and um, as a rather direct result, rodents really freaked me out! I'm somewhat better now. Still have never seen that movie. Yick!

Scary movies and books tend to bring out my silly fears. After I watched The Sixth Sense, I had a hard time looking in the mirror without worrying about turning around and seeing a dead person. I know it's fiction--but man, can I creep myself out.

As a child I was scared of worms. And since they always appeared after it rained, I was pretty sure that the reason you carried an umbrella was to keep the worms off your body.

I was scared of the dark until I got married. Actually I guess I still would be if my husband was away. In that case, I think I'd sleep with my manuscript, too 8)
